For Kyra Holt the White Ribbon Spoken Word was a dual opportunity.
“I love writing poetry and the writing comes naturally and it was great to be able to perform them for an audience. But the night itself was incredible. I got to meet the other poets and we all hit it off really well.”
Kyra, 17, attends Wellington Girls College and says the White Ribbon message is necessary.
“Violence against women is a heavy topic and it is important for people our age to get involved as it is a part of our lives. Poetry is a good way to express your feelings about some dark subjects.”
Kyra was part of the White Ribbon Youth Ambassador program and served as a student mediator.
“I want to continue being involved in whatever I’m needed for. The message is so important that the violence has to stop. Young people can have a real impact on changing attitudes,” says Kyra.
She has set up an Instagram chat page on White Ribbon Ambassador information for schools and says young people have good communication, particularly through social media.
“I want to encourage as many young people as possible to get involved,” says Kyra.
